As I practise it, mentoring is coaching, but with the benefit of the coach’s sound experience within the client’s current or planned operating business environment. To be a mentor is not to be an adviser, but to be able to grasp the priorities and processes in the client’s environment in order to aid the self-development process.
Personal Mentoring encompasses similar characteristics to those described on the coaching page. However, sometimes, experience in and knowledge of the environment that the client is working within is a natural advantage.
Business Mentoring brings, particularly to a start up or small company, a range of experience and knowledge to be applied in a practical and objective way by the busy entrepreneur.
Before setting up my own consultancy business in 2003, I had a long and successful career in investment banking in the City of London. My experience therefore encompasses practical knowledge of research, sales, trading and corporate banking.
My specialisation was equity research which required top level communication with listed company boards, senior institutional investment managers, bankers, etc. The context of company financial analysis also brought considerable experience of corporate strategy and management.
My City career also required skills in team building and team leadership - See CV
